AMLI was founded in 1980 by John Allen and Greg Mutz,〔(AMLI Corp. Website )〕 the “A” and the “M” in AMLI. The two created a new corporation to third-party manage the real estate division of Life Investors Insurance Co, a Cedar Rapids, Iowa based company – forming the “AMLI” name.
AMLI evolved from a private real estate development company to, in 1994, a publicly traded Real estate investment trust – trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol AML and selling 8.9 million shares valued at almost 200 million.
In February 2006, AMLI became a private company again through a $2.1 billion 〔(''Bloomberg'', October 24, 2005 )〕 transaction with the Prime Property Fund, a core, open-ended, institutional real estate fund managed by Morgan Stanley.〔(''Chicago Tribune'', Morgan Stanley to buy AMLI Residential, October 25, 2005 )〕 Prime owns or has an investment interest in approximately $9 billion of high-quality, diverse real estate assets including retail, office, multifamily, hotel, and industrial properties located in major markets throughout the United States.
